Haynes repair manual says that crankshaft sensor is toward firewall on 1986 2.8L Pontiac but can not find any?

There is a bolt head in the supposed spot on the block where book said sensor would be but no wires or plug on bolt head. in line wire plug was on wrong side from where book said. This is new motor to me so have no idea where to look and or to pick and choose from other plugs and sensors.Haynes repair manual says that crankshaft sensor is toward firewall on 1986 2.8L Pontiac but can not find any?
neither of those guys are right, the haynes manual is, it should be on the back side of the block (not the head), best way to see it is to get under the car, look up between the engine and transmission extension housing, its in the center of the block (from side to side), and a few inches up from the oil pan, might also have a small tin heat shield covering it. if you still have troubles e-mail me i'll send you a pic. i have a 2.8l (autotech1117@hotmail.com)
It should be on top of the engine near the bell housing. It's a little two wired magnetic pick-up that senses the breaks in the metal ring that is attached to the back of the crankshaft. That plug could possibly be the sensor with the wires pulled out due to age.

There is a possibility the engine was swapped by someone, before you acquired the vehicle, with an older engine that doesn't use that sensor. It might even be a year or two older engine that was sitting on the assembly plants floor that they put in because it was there and they needed to use it.Haynes repair manual says that crankshaft sensor is toward firewall on 1986 2.8L Pontiac but can not find any?
find ur belt...look for the biggest pulley..it has a long bolt in the middle of it....if ur take pulley off..crank and cam should be right there..dont know name of pulley..but i know u need special tool to get it off ..i have a 91 3.8L pontiac..and thats where mines is
what the manual failed to tell you , is that the senor is between engine and trans. This is vin W motor i hope.you can see it from bottom only. My experience is that if its not been changed in 20 years, it won`t come out from the top.Last one had to be drove out from inside engine, which means dropping oil pan.get help with this repair.Haynes repair manual says that crankshaft sensor is toward firewall on 1986 2.8L Pontiac but can not find any?
My best advise to you is go buy a chilton manual, because i am having problems with my pontiac and the haynes repair manual. so it would be easier to buy a chilton repair manual.
