What does "turn the ignition key to the ON position" mean?

i read that in my haynes repair manual. does that mean that i turn on the car or does it simply mean that i turn the key to the ON position, which is the position right before the START position? What does "turn the ignition key to the ON position" mean?
No you don't actually need to start the car. It just means to turn the key to where it says "ON". It's typically the setting right after "Accessory."What does "turn the ignition key to the ON position" mean?
You turn it as far as you can without starting the engine. What does "turn the ignition key to the ON position" mean?
The on position means only to the position before the engine starts. And not the position after it starts period. The start position means up to the the point before the engine starts when all dash instrument lights are seen working like your alt. light, oil pressure light,etc..
