Looking into getting one for my 85 chevy s-10, wondering which is better or if their is any difference at all. Are these manuals the same as a "SHOP repair manual"?? If not, how so?Whats the difference between haynes and chilton auto repair manuals?
I'm not sure exactly what "shop" manuals you're looking at buy today the price tag for a Chevrolet Shop Manual will ding you well over $200.00. They're hundreds of pages thick and include part numbers of special tools necessary to successfully overhaul any part of the truck. Explanations are more detailed, pictures, printing and paper quality is better and more complete than Motors, Haynes or Chilton's manuals.
Get this: To cut paper costs, factory service manuals are now sold on a cheap plastic CD @ the same high price. The only place to purchase these manuals is at a dealer parts counter.
Joe-
Haynes and Chiltons are the worst manuals you can get your hands on.
For Chevrolet you really need to get into contact with Helm Publications.
I used to work as a Mechanic then moved into the Parts Department at a local Chevrolet Dealership.
Helm Publications is the company that GM uses for all of their factory shop manuals that the Dealership's use. They are by far the most complete, and include everything your are going to need to to know about your C85S Body Truck.
The manuals are year specific and will cover the "S" Model, (4x2) and the "T" Model (4x4) for that year. Be sure to specify what Manual you will need. There will be a Body Repair, Electrical, Tune Up, Transmission/Final Drive, (Rear End), Suspension/Steering, and Engine and Fuel Management/Emission Controls.
They may have them available on CD now too. Just be aware, they are going to be a little on the pricey side, as compaired to the Kragen Crap. But these include complete troubleshooting guides for each section. These manuals not only guide you through the actual repair process, but they also tell you exactly where the devices on these vehicles are, and the easiest way to get them replaced.
The only other set of manuals I would consider after the Helm Publications set are the ones that are available from Motor Age. The Motor Manuals are also some of the very best ones.
But for GM, try Helm Publications first.
Good Luck!Whats the difference between haynes and chilton auto repair manuals?
%26gt;%26gt;i have bought both books for the same vehicle, nearly identical even made by the same company if you look at a chilton close enough you will find the Haynes name and logo somewhere%26lt;%26lt;
Just as he said. Both made by the same company, two different books to make more money for the same company. Why are you concerned with a "fake shop manual" what you have is the same information a shop has.
Both manuals are ideal for DIY. The reason being factory or manufacturers manuals do not contain specific information about how to do the work. They are written for mechanics who already know what they are doing so they miss detail that a novice needs. The additional photographs, sketches, and suggestions for making up special tools are invaluable, where the workshop one will say use tool number 1235 etc.
They often have you take off more parts than you need to do a job, but that's to help the less skilled.
If you are learning and you follow their instructions you won't go wrong though.Whats the difference between haynes and chilton auto repair manuals?
For most of my cars I end up getting both, because one or the other will be incomplete in something. Often looking at both does help. As mentioned they aren't perfect at all, but hey - the cost like $20 new, what do you expect. I also use the internet and research and print things out and ask people who own the same type of car.
For most home mechanics either the Haynes or the Chilton is a great place to start. If you get into body electrical (that varies widely between different trim levels and model years) you'll find yourself wasting some time to sort out what's going on most often, but at least you will have a place to start.
Just go to used book stores until you find one or the other. Much cheaper and faster to get your hands on. An 85 Chev s10 is about as far from rocket science as you can get. Either will have all you need and more.
I'm not worried about fake manuals either, since I never heard of such a thing until you mentioned it.
well, if your looking to buy chilton/haynes. don't. got to http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairi鈥?/a> and sign up for free. they are the same. right down to the finger nails on the hands in illustrations.
IT'S FREE!
I think both haynes and chilton suck. They don't provide enough detailed information in alot of cases. You are better off searcing ebay for a factory service manual. Far more detail in those.
i have bought both books for the same vehicle, nearly identical even made by the same company if you look at a chilton close enough you will find the Haynes name and logo somewhere
actually ive heard one is way more detailed and ive heard this from professionals that Chilton's are more detailed
Sometimes I have gotten both for the same vehicle because there are differences and they fill in each others' gaps.
second is better
