My husband and I have bought a 1965 MGB that needs work. We aren't car people but we wanted to take on the challenge because I like the aesthetics of the car. I'm looking at the Haynes repair manual for the cars 62-80. The first thing we're going to tackle is the transmission. In this section of the book there is Gearbox, Overdrive, and Automatic Transmission. I don't see how to repair the manual transmission. Should I be looking for a different word? Remember we are very new to this.1965 MGB Manual transmission help?
Gearbox is another name for manual transmission.1965 MGB Manual transmission help?
You two are very courageous people and i admire you two for that, I hope that you have chosen the right challenge. It is not a very easy task to take on if you are not conversant with fixing cars never mind rebuilding one.
I would strongly advise you that if you do not know nothing at all about rebuilding, Engine, Transmission, Differential, Brakes, %26amp; so on these are just some of the parts, my advise to you both is please do not attempt it.
On the other hand It would be an idea, if some one of experience in this field who you can possibly find is doing a similar thing to what you both are about to do, then take a part in what this person is doing and you will have some one there to guide and teach through the whole project.
On the other hand you could advertise for such person and there might be a volunteer out there who is willing to spend some time with your project and get you through the course, or go to evening classes at your local college and learn as you are rebuilding at the same time.1965 MGB Manual transmission help?
Cars like this are usually stick shift cars. Are you sure you have an automatic??? Usually, the only thing that goes wrong with the manual "gearbox" are the shaft bearings. If the car does not shift, it might just be due to a shifter mechanism that requires adjustment. Overdrive is found on mostly later model cars with automatic transmissions. On an MGB, I don't believe that an auto trans was offered until the late seventies. Any competent transmission shop should be able to figure out the condition of your shifter, clutch, and driveshaft. It is NOT rocket science. It IS an interesting challenge, though. You can even GOOGLE "MGB trans repair" and probably come up with something. If you were in the Detroit area, I would love to see this car personally. I have experience with the engine and carburetor side drafts For me, they are a lot of fun to play with. You just might need to have the cylinder head removed to have it converted to unleaded fuel use, for best performance. Keep my E-mail address handy, and I will try to help you find people that are worthy.
