How successful were the military tactics used by south the vietnamese government and the USA?
what were the tactics used and how successful where they??
thanks :)How successful were the military tactics used by south the vietnamese government and the USA?In all conventional battles the kill ratio was very much in favour of the ARVN and US forces. Even the Tet offensive cost the NVA and Viet Cong thousnads of men, despite the US media painting this as a win for the communists.
The North had a saying, "for every American we will lose a thousand, and these casualties mean you will tire before us"
And so it was to be: the media and politicians threw away a victory. How successful were the military tactics used by south the vietnamese government and the USA?This is kind of wheels within wheels. The day to day engagements were a toss up - they had tunnels and tactics we weren't used to, but we adapted and had defoliants and helos and fire bombing. I don't know that there were any better or more effective tactics the Americans could have used, given the constraints on them.
And that's a big point.
The larger purpose of the war was was not to conquer north viet nam. They could have done that in two weeks if they let the dogs off the leash. The purpose was to play a terribly dangerous and important game of chess or chicken with the Soviet Union. This was like playing tennis in a mine field. The US, USSR, and China all had both dogs in the fight and nukes. At any second, someone could have gotten too pissed off or felt offended or whatever and launched what might have been the end of the world. At any time. And generals clamoring to do just that.
The fact that this all played out, with the perfect balance between containing the Soviets while still allowing them to keep enough dignity and not lose face to the point where they boiled over, was perhaps the most brilliant diplomatic and policy achievement in history. How successful were the military tactics used by south the vietnamese government and the USA?napalm against villages, and covert CIA operations were bloody but effective.
public outcry (justified) in the US, quickly made it an unpopular warHow successful were the military tactics used by south the vietnamese government and the USA?
well its guerilla warfare in jungles. although the us was in a disadvantage not being real familiar. you can say there successful because they technically never lost a battle
