What is that thing called where you work for the military without being in the military?

I want to be a Biology teacher and would like to benefit the military too but am not really up for being in it myself and going through boot camp and stuff. But I recently heard about this program you go through and you basically work for the military and get many of the benefits, you just aren't really in it? There really isn't a specific name. It will change depending on the position.



Where I work at we just refer to them as "the civilians", they do the same job as us, just don't get deployed or wear a uniform. These are difficult jobs to land. They are good at their job, are paid well, and receive a simaler retirement and health care to us.



The website www.usajobs.gov has all Federal jobs listed on it. Go on and type some of the things you would like to do into the search engine. It will tell you what is available. There will be many. Try teacher,biologist and things like that. If you want to serve the country, and want to teach, you don't have to work for the Department of Defense. All teachers perform a vital service to the country, just on a community level. It is a noble proffesion.What is that thing called where you work for the military without being in the military?
GS does not stand for Government service, it stands for General Schedule. There are a lot of different levels of government employees, not all are GS, some are WG or Wage Grade, they are federal but work at an hourly rate not salary like GS does.

It's called employment. The DOD and military departments employ lots of civilians.
