What if we ship out the criminals, and offer others choice of military service as road to citizenship or leave and be able to apply for legal immigration.
If they took military service we would have more troops, and they would get job training that could be very handy in the private sector.

Since every person who violates immigration law has in fact committed a crime -- a felony, not just a misdemeanor -- no immigration-law violator should ever be allowed to stay. Besides, allow one to stay and a thousand more think they can break the law and get away with it, too.
Then consider that over 90% of immigration-law violators have committed additional crimes. And these illegal aliens generally cannot satisfactorily prove who they really are and that they were completely law-abiding in their home country - we have no idea who might have committed a robbery, rape, murder, whatever, and is fleeing before they get caught.
Very stupid, short-sighted idea to allow known lawbreakers to remain in the US under any circumstances. I know I would not want to be the one to slap them in the face for all there effort and hard work and hand a easy pass to illegals. As a legal, once again I say they need to do the paperwork like everyone else and pay the money it cost to be legal. I do not want to hear that is hard because I know this I was there.
Serving in the military is a PRIVILEGE to me. Being a LEGAL immigrant myself (I got my citizenship 3 months ago) I feel that you have to want to serve in the military. I served for 5 years and I felt it was the least I could do to give something back to the country that opened so many doors of opportunity for me. But, it will never work. We have way way too many people in this country that will protest it. I dont. Why would we expect them to fight for us, when they will not fight for themselves in their own country. Never mind they disregard the laws of the US, again, how would we ever expect them to fight for something they do not obey/follow/respect?

There was a major riot in New York City during the Civil War. Irish immigrants were taken straight off the boats into the Union Army; back in those days Ellis Island was used to quarantine sick immigrants other then that anyone who set foot on our shores was a landed immigrant; we didn't have an INS or any kind of Bureaucracy established for "Immigration". Everyone was pretty much welcome here; but the immigrants did bring disease and crime with them and they also clung on to their cultural customs. The established Americans disliked the immigrants immensely, just like they do today; but the politicians loved them. The Irish set up a political spoils system that peaked under the mayoral reign of "Boss Tweed". The immigrants were absorbed into the police force as well as the military and they gained a lot of political power. Civil service jobs were doled out to friends; the rest is history and history repeats itself. The people that control the military have ultimate power because they have the the power of life and death. Are you sure that you want to put that kind of power in the hands of felons and illegal immigrants?
If they are criminals they should automatically get deported. If they are law abiding (w/the exception of them being here illegally) I think the option should be given. If they choose not to serve in the military or be a productive member of society, they should be deported too.
I work in military recruiting and we do have many illegal aliens/non-green card holders that come by to see if they can sign up. Of course we have to turn them away since you have to be a resident alien or a U.S citizen in order to serve in the military.
If they want to volunteer, I don't see the problem. Not all illegal aliens have ties to their country. The majority of them have been here for several generations and some have been in the states as early as their first memory, the only thing that stops them from being "American" is their birth certificate. It's the best way to show their allegiance to this country.
We have a hard enough time recruiting Americans. This could really help out the Army and Marines who have implemented stop-loss and recruitment of convicted felons.
