Some aspects of this question are pretty obvious, but for people who are actually in the Military, which of your own freedoms have you given up for others?What do people sacrifice by joining the Military?Friends, family, the bands I was in, family a second time, the ability to take a week off if I wanted to, the choice of where to live, sleep and the inability to quit when I don't like it.
But, to be honest, it's all been worth it. I mean, other than those things listed above, it's really worth it. You can't ask for a better thing to do with your life. What do people sacrifice by joining the Military?
I personally gave up the independence of living in my own apartment. I also haven't seen my dog or hometown in 2 years (haven't been able to take more than 2 days leave at a time; my field is almost critically manned). I broke up with my long-time boyfriend, who I might very well have married. For 6.5 weeks of Basic, and then 28 days of tech school, I essentially gave up my right to privacy. I also don't have the right to choose where I want to live and when, or whether, I want to move. I don't have the ability to just hand in my two weeks' notice, either.
I have a very dear friend who broke up with the love of his life because he wasn't going to see her for 2 years (OCS, then training, then 15 month deployment). 13 months later, he's still upset about it and misses her terribly; she's still a bit of a wreck too.
In the end, though, it's worth it. Everything. I love waking up in the morning and knowing that my sacrifice makes it possible for my loved ones to enjoy their freedom. I love the life I have built for myself. I love what I do; I love that I'm getting my Bachelor's degree for free right now. I love being in a combat zone and helping Soldiers and Marines and Airmen and Sailors and Guardsmen recover from attacks (I'm a medic). I love the Airmen I serve with; they're the best friends I've ever had. I love that when I look at an American flag, I feel the most powerful swell of pride and love. I love knowing that my grandchildren will be free, due in part to my service.What do people sacrifice by joining the Military?I am not in the military but my husband is and we have had to sacrifice so much. We have been together for 10 and 1/2 years now. When we got together I was only 15 and he was 18 just joined the service. So from my 10th grade year in highschool until I got out and we got married (1 month after I graduated) we missed out on homecomings, proms the normal life of a teenager. Than we tried for 5 years to have a baby and when we finally got pregnant 2 months later he came down on orders for Iraq. He missed 6 months of my pregnancy due to leaving and being in the field. Than he missed our daughter's birth and got to meet her when she was 2 and 1.2 months. But than left again until she was 11 months old. That was very hard and still hard to deal with because all of the firsts of everything he missed. We just now had our son and he did get to see him born but left for his 2nd deployment to Iraq and its been very hard but luckily just got home a week ago. So many people take there freedom for granted because they forget. My little brother once said if people have to give up something that was important to them like sacrifice there cell phones everyday than they would just see a taste of what our Men and Woman in uniform have to go threw and there families.
My husband was in the Army, and I am joining the Air Force soon. I think that the biggest sacrifice is time away from your family. My husband deployed when my son was only 3 months old, and didn't come back till he was almost 2. He missed the first time he crawled, walked, and talked. I sent him video tape of everything, but it's not the same. For single people I don't know if Family is the biggest sacrifice. I guess it depends on how close they are with their family. tell ya what, after the first day you wake up at Boot-camp at 4:30 am and feel that freshly shaved head and hear the trash can lids smashing together until everyone is standing at attention waiting to be barked orders at until Graduation, you will have a small taste of the Sacrifice~!!!
