1991 Ford Tempo GL Bearing Repair Problems?

We were given a 1991 Ford Tempo GL from my dad's boss.

It had sat in the boss' rock quarry for about 10 years.

It had a clear, but salvaged title, but it has 75,000 original miles on it.

When we got it, we knew there would definitely be some problems, or otherwise, he'd not just give it to us for free.

The only problem we are having is with the front passenger side bearing.

The first go round, hubby fixed it exactly as the Haynes manual said.

It worked fine, then the bearing started making that noise again, and the bearing had unworked from the hub again (the original problem).

Then, we got my dad in on the case, because he has experience working on cars, and they fixed it again, and now, it's doing the same thing again.

Now they're both thinking that maybe the 1/2 shaft needs a complete rework.

Any ideas or clues?

Please don't go bashing Ford and all that stuff...take your bias out and please just tell us what you would do from a mechanic's point of view.

We don't have the luxury of purchasing a car on a note (we are paying on one but can't afford 2 notes) or the cash for a cheap "cash outright" car...but we've already put $800 into this "free" car, and I want to make sure that it's not a moot point to continue working on it.

hello,i've seen this one before what has happened is someone has his something very hard with that wheel replace the knuckle or have it remachined checked for cracks or the bearing has slid and galled but i would get one from a salvage yard unless your shaft is bent or deformed from whatever the wheel hit but it would the carrier has been damaged so check for worn out bushings on the lower a arm and strut and you should be good to go

Use your magic wand on it.1991 Ford Tempo GL Bearing Repair Problems?
There's no reason the brearing should work itself out ever. The only thing I can think is that there is a retaining ring missing thats meant to hold the bearing in place. Probably was accidently not installed at one point. Remove steerng knuckle and check for a 3mm groove that might hold a retainer.
