In Overdrive @ 35 mph, wont shift into 4th. What could be the problem?

This is a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis station wagon with a 5.0 engine, automatic transmission.

Can shift to Overdrive, but once its in 3rd and attempts to go to 4th (overdrive), it goes to neutral, this is @ about 35mph. All other gears work fine. Fluid is fine, no hesitations at all, drive works, and also first.

I did look up at one point in time that a similar problem with a 1990 ford and one of the answers to resolve the question was to change the engine temperature sensor as it wont allow the transmission to shift to overdrive if the temperature is under 20F.

My temperature gauge also does not work... could the engine temperature sensor be the culprit?

I have a Haynes Repair Manual and first thing it says for me to do is check the rod linkage and make sure it is adjusted properly.

I don't see the temperature sensor being the problem, you might need to check the wiring that's going to the temperature sensor , to see if that's why the gauge isn't working,it could be a bad sensor as well,You need to be going around 45-50 mph before the over drive will kick in ,the oer drive could be burnt out.In Overdrive @ 35 mph, wont shift into 4th.
